Mechanical properties and structure of joints of 2017A aluminum alloy sheets welded using friction stir welding were examined. A universal testing machine, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope were used. It was found that higher rotation speed of tool (900 min(-1) then 355 min(-1) ) decrease properties of the joint. Two types of friction surfaces of tensile test samples were observed: (i) transcrystalline in the area of tool penetration field and (ii) intercrystalline in the nugget of the joint.
