| dc.description.abstract | Mathematical texts are characterised by the occurrence of specific
symbols. They may be letters (as applied, for example, by Euclid), number
symbols or graphic signs with context-independent meaning. Mathematical
symbols store knowledge of previous generations that provides frameworks
with which to examine history of mathematical problems. In this paper, we
deal with symbols related to the concept of function and related concepts like
limit, and some other set theoretical or logical concepts. We focus on symbols
that have survived unchanged into the present day and are commonly
used. In part, we rely on the well-known book by Florian Cajori, “History
of Mathematical Notations”, first published in 1928-1929. Since mathematical
notation is still growing, we also present symbols emerged after [Cajori
1928-1929]. | en |
