The article is concerned with the characteristics (amount and directions) of emigration to foreign countries by the
inhabitants of a rural district situated in the north-eastern part of the Cracow Province, during the years 1900—
1965. According to the respective duration of the phenomenon three types of emigration were distinguished:
permanent emigration, periodical emigration, and season emigration.
Among the basic conclusions of the study is the statement that foreign emigration from the District of Dąbrowa
Tarnowska at that time was a continuous process. The extent cf emigration and its directions prior to 1945 were
dependent upon the social, economic and political situation both in the native country of the immigrants and in the
immigration countries. The now existing permanent emigration from that district is a result of previous emigration.
