The author has collected, compared and commented upon the scanty information available on the evolution of tendencies and developmental trends in geography teaching in Poland as set against the teaching of the subject in other countries. He has shown that almost from the very beginning of geography teaching in Poland teachers have been seeking to improve the methods and forms in which it was taught. On the example of Jagiellonian University it can be shown that even as early as in the Renaissance period people were concerning themselves with this problem; then, in the seventeenth century, J. A. Komeński made an important contribution in this field. Later, the tendency to reform the organization and the teaching methods of every subject, and of geography among others, a tendency
which grew in strength during the Enlightenment period, found expression in the works undertaken by the Commission of National Education. The article deals in greater detail with the new educational ideas applied to geography teaching in Poland in the final stage preceding the regaining of national independence (i.e. before World War I) and then in the inter-war period. Discussing the contemporary tendency to modernize schoolwork the author analyses the system of teaching by combining theory with practice, programmed teaching and the problem method as well as the organization of group work.
