Abstract

The paper deals with such complex sentences with the indicators что, это, in which the second clause develops the content of the whole first one. Clauses with что, и/a, но/это, это, вот что, вот это, вследствие чего (этого), can be treated as one semantic and structural type, disregarding the formal criteria. The author of the paper explains what grammatical characteristics distinguish these constructions from the hypotaxis, parataxis and annexation. She also defines the specific qualities of the conjunctive pronouns что, это. She deals as well with the genesis of the relative pronouns and their occurence in other languages.
