Abstract

The paper presents the conditions of flood formation and course, giving an example of four greatest floods in the area of the upper Vistula basin during the last fifteen years. Evaluating the above — mentioned floods the author concludes that each one of them gave rise to different morphological effects, in respect both to quality and quantity. The author explains this by specific features of the basin relief, as well as by different hydrological and meteorological conditions in the basin during the origin of the flood. The author believes that one of the most important reasons of the flood course conditions being altered is the man who improves flow conditions of flood- waters by a constant modernization of hydrotechnical plants. In the end of the paper economical effects of flood freshet have been shown, giving an example of the flood in 1972.
