The author's reflections on the ambiguity of a work of art are based upon concrete facts of the history of literature: he analyses both the structure and perception of H. Sienkiewicz's novel „Without a Dogma”. An investigation of the history of perception of this novel from its author’s times up to the present day helped to note down the phenomenon of the changeability of the interpretation of a work and its evaluation in connexion with the methodological viewpoint as well as the needs and tastes of the reading public etc. These reflections helped the author to formulate some conclusions about the ambiguity and manifold functions of a work of art. The author proves the fact that the ambiguity of a work of art leads to manifold functions of its perception. He demonstrates as well that the relative nature of the receipt of a work, which is due to many factors, can be understood only in its relation to the identity of a work of art. In this connexion the author defined his attitude towards Roman Ingarden’s views on the problem under discussion.en_EN
