The conducted analysis comprises those images of reality described by Babel, which constitute the writer-
ornamentalist’s characteristic substance. Such writer tends to seek a theatrical ornamentation in the surrounding
world, its exquisite colour, and a detail, which can adopt an extraordinaiy standing. Not only the artistic prose
of Armia Konna was taken into consideration but also the text of Dziennik, which could be treated as the rough
material for this sequence of works.
The presentation of the scene of events depicted from the perspective of writer Lutow, who is the narrator,
undergoes the analysis. His attention is attracted by whatever happens on the ground, in the landscape, sky, the
sun, the moon; and the presentation is conducted with the use of rich rhetorical figures and in the fairy-tale
manner. On the one hand, such a description reflects the wealth of the inner world of the observer, lonely amidst
the Cossacks; on then other hand, it depicts cruelty and death brought about by the war.
The author draws the attention to Poles and Poland in the works and personal notes of the writer, which are in fact
much different from what is usually attributed to the writer.
