Abstract

The name Jan/John is one of the most popular masculine names. It came to Polish together with religious vocabulary - the first Polish record dates from the year 1202. Material presented in the paper represents regional Polish language of Malopolska/Lesser Poland in the 16th to 18th centuries. The name Jan/John occurred in the relic in a few variants: lexical, phonetic, and formative ones. Lexical Latin form Johannes occurred only in Latin records (46 times), Polish form Jan - till today the official form - has the highest frequency of use, so many as 237. A phonetic variant of the name Jan, Jon - dialectal form - occurred 9 times while formative variants (original hipocoristica) are certified in less number: Janek - a form widely used in common Polish till today - 10 times; Jonek (from Jon), dialectal form - one time, and Jasiek, today used both in common and regional Polish - 11 times. The most frequently the name occurred in the years 1600-1650 (143 times), a little less often (84 times) in the years 1535-1600, next in the years 1700-1767 (63 times), and at last the most seldom in the years 1650-1700 (24 times).
