The subject of the paper are titles and names of Holy Mary that occur in pastoral letters of the Conferences of Polish Episcopate from the years 1945-2005. The main subject is functionality and strategic character of these names and designations both in particular pastoral letters and in the whole discourse of the Episcopate, their extratextual motivation and pragmatic character. In the analysis religious and theological dimensions of the letters as well as historical and socio-political contexts of them were considered. The author also describes the onymic and appellative status of names of Holy Mary as well as lexico-syntactic innovations characteristic of names referring to Holy Mary in the letters. The author argue that both linguistic structure and semantic and pragmatic meaning of these names and descriptions were subordinated much more to current socio-political and pastoral-catechetical than to theological-biblical needs.en_EN
