The paper calls attention to the need of developing pupils’ linguistic and cultural competence by means of including thematic vocabulary into educational discourses. This vocabulary appears in thematic discourse in which both written and spoken texts are focused on the same topic. Introducing thematic vocabulary is necessary for developing a supply of lexical items and in an important way contributes to effective developing children's linguistic skills. In this paper an analysis of vocabulary excerpted from thematic discourses on suffering in the fourth form of primary school was done. Both conversational discourse an example of which is a lesson and textual discourse - pupils' compositions - were taken into account. Words and expressions that appear during a discussion about suffering were described and compared to a vocabulary of homework compositions. Pupils' compositions are distinctly more linguistically plentiful. It all makes to conclude that during lessons of Polish language and literature strong stress should be laid on practising the skill of speaking, developing communicational competence. Suitably arranged thematic discourses that allow to reveal pupils' interests may surely contribute to developing the competence.en_EN
