dc.description.abstractThe first part of the paper refers to definitions of snobbery and cognate words (snob, snobbish. snobbishly, to do sth out of sheer snobbery) that can be found in modern dictionaries of the Polish language (Słownik języka polskiego ed. by M. Szymczak, Uniwersalny słownik języka polskiego ed. by S. Dubisz, Inny słownik języka polskiego ed. by M. Bańko, Słownik wyrazów obcych published by Polish Scientific Publishers). In the latter part of the paper the author explains the notion of profiling and then he analyzes utterances of participants of the television programme, which allows to look at the problems of profiling through a genre convention of utterances. Both quoted utterances and the analysis of them lead to distinguishing A profile of the notion snob that value negatively - in agreement with definitions in dictionaries — and B profile that value positively and thus exceed primary definitions.en_EN
