Abstract

The paper refers to not elaborated so far place names of Rzeszów. Conducted by the author linguistic analysis of ways of nominalization that is also an analysis of derivative type of place names of Rzeszów shows that a general Polish onomastic scheme exists in the discussed onym word category. It should be noticed that a role in the choice of a name plays also the character of a place. The most interesting from the point of view of lexical bases are propria with supplied documentary evidence of origin. More numerous group includes names that are conventional, without real meaning motivation, derived as a result of duplication of patterns fixed formerly in a system. In the discussed onym word layer the commemorative onomastic type, especially anthroponymic names, distinctly predominates in modern times. Propria with realistic motivation, e.g. cultural and topographic names, are less productive.
