Abstract

St.Florian's Collegiate Church in Cracow has been known since 1185. Near to it a settlement, which in 1366 became the town of Kleparz located according to the Magdeburg law, had been founded. Up to the end of the First „Republic of the Gentry" (so the Kingdom of Poland used to be called) there was only one school in the territory of Kleparz and the neighbouring settlements connected with it by both geographical and economical situation. It was St.Florian's Collegiate Church School. The first unquestionable information about the building of St.Florian's School dates back to the later part of the 15th century. Since the later part of the 17th century the exterior of the building had not changed. This statement may be confirmed by iconographic relics, i.e. the pictures: St.Florian's Church by Jan Tritius, the view of Kleparz market-place and St.Florian's Church by Maksymilian Cercha and the combined painting of Juliusz Kossak and Stanisław Tondos as well as the photographies of Kleparz market-place made in Ignacy Krieger’s atelier in Cracow. The building of the school has existed up to 1887. The descriptions of the interior of the building of. St.Florian's Collegiate School date back only to the 18th century. Together with the pictures of the exterior of the school building they enable us to define the localization of the various parts of the building. The most accurate and extensive description of the interior (partly of the exterior as well) of the building of St.Florian's Collegiate School has been worked out by the well-known Cracow architect Karol Kriszkier. The document was ready on the 10th of February, 1797. The original document is kept in the Archives of. St.Florian's Collegiate in Cracow. The school building seems to have been examined and described again in 1812. This description is less accurate but it enables us to have a look at the repairs which took place after 1797. This document is stored in the Archives of the Jagellonian University.
