Stanisław Zarański (1817—1889), a Galician educator, was an original theorist in the fields of national education,
the methodics of elementary instruction and the didactics of history. His conceptions of the school system aimed
at the changes of the programmes and methods of instruction, not at those of the structure of the school.
Zarański devoted a great part of his work to the instruction of the people which he regarded as a base of national
education and the teaching of the young generation. He postulated an introduction of the modern methodics of
elementary instruction based upon the teaching of mother tongue, the history of Poland and religious education.
Stanisław Zarański made an interesting proposal. He proposed to combine the „real” and „classical" types of
secondary schools in respect to structure and programme, to unify the programme of instruction and education at
both these kind of schools. „Real" and „classical" subjects were to complete one another in order to create a
many-sided personality of a pupil, to give him a comprehensive training. Zarański postulated a connexion of school
programme with the needs of social life.
