The article is an attempt at exposing links between two areas of human life: politics and economy: and it tries
to deal with the problem of the degree of mutual dependency of democracy and economy and the level of their
development. Do the economic factors, such as high economic growth, market economy, equal division of national
income, economic development and modernisation, condition the existence of political democracy? And perhaps, as
exemplified by some Asian countries (Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam), a high level of economic growth
does not have to indicate the emergence of political democracy. The raised questions reflect the complexity of
the problem. It is difficult to put forward a definite statement that a sole cause of the democratic system is
the economic growth. It can be said, with some caution and more certainty, that it is a necessary and fundamental
prerequisite for the process of creating democracy and constituting its basis.
The presented problem was analysed from the perspective of changes implemented in the three areas of social life,
that is economy, politics and the society. The starting point are the changes initiated by the Round Table talks
although the impact of economy on politics was realised in the system of real socialism, too.
