The subject matter of the paper is a brief presentation of philosophical objectives and the intellectual context of Karol Irzykowski’s novel entitled Paluba. The main goal of the author was to expose numerous deformations and simplifications inextricably connected with any cognition process. Their cause was attributed to their incongruence with the reality of our concepts with which we depict the world. Hence we need to clear our mind of many inventions, schemes and abstractions which distort our perception of the world. Epistemological criticisms and the programme of fight with hypostases in the name of a kind of empiricism was characteristic of Irzykowski as a representative of a numerous group pf thinkers who formed so called “second positivism”. Such philosophers as Ernst Mach with his anti- metaphysical and radical sensualism should be the point of reference in the analysis of the discourse content of Pałuba. The author of the paper is hesitant about placing Irzykowski in the position of a predecessor of Freudian thought, or psychoanalysis in general, because all comparisons seem very superficial here.en_EN
