The article attempts to analyse the key religious and philosophical issues which were included in Karol Ludwik
Koniński’s war diary entitled Uwagi (Remarks) 1940-1942. The major motif of the analysed theological and
philosophical outlook is the paradox of the simultaneous existence of God and evil in the human world. An
aggravated form of suffering caused by the war circumstances makes the diarist ponder upon the sense of religion
and faith in God, who allows for the unjustifiable evil. Koniński in his considerations of good and evil, on the
one hand studies the Christian attitude based on unselfish faith, which gives sense to senseless existence. On
the other hand, he makes reference to the philosophical ideas, especially to personalism, which give answers to
questions of the human existence in the situation of threat.
Remarks 1940-1942 do not provide unequivocal solution to the doubts evoked by the situation of the war-generated
evil. They merely indicate possible and proper ways to achieve faith in God who, according to the author, is the
only being reconciling the absurd of the world.
