The paper deals with pragmatics of some language phenomena in the perspective both of cognitive grammar and
educational linguistics. On the basis of pieces of writing by pupils and students several issues were
distinguished: man and the world, ways of defining the world, semantic fields of globalization and labyrinth. The
world created in a language having both realistic and mythological characteristics includes spatial, social, and
cultural elements. The common feature of conceptualization is noticing contrasts and diversity in the world as
well as some elements of catastrophism. Three aspects of the world were possible to show: the world around, the
world of our relations to others, our own world. The aspects were presented mainly by means of spatial metaphors
that, as is well known, are among basic elements of semantics. The metaphors were taken from both culture and
nature, e.g. the tower of Babel, Arcadia, an anthill, a volcano. Two metaphors - of the global village and of the
labyrinth - were especially often used; they characterized all aspects of the world. In the presented creative
formulation of language the metaphors used by pupils and students clearly showed the user, his/her individuality
and his/her view of the world.
