The essay attempts at the defining of the essence of the professional role of a teacher, and reduces it to the
constant playing with freedom. Being a teacher consists, as it were, in the tendency to influence the others. The
executing of this profession is inevitably connected with compulsion. The use of compulsion is determined by the
teacher's involvement in his own human nature, tradition, and culture, aa well as the political system he
functions in. It is connected with the necessity of the socialization of pupils which causes the playing with
their personalities. The selection of the contents, methods, and styles of teaching is closely related to these
matters. The teacher's freedom of choice is equal to his responsibility in all the above-mentioned domains.
According to Ingarden, responsibility means "being born", "being undertaken", it results in "acting", and "being
summoned". The neglect of any aspect of responsibility leads to the destruction of the sense of the whole idea.
