Professional training of teachers in the contemporary world seems to be lagging behind changes that take place in the modem school. Quick and efficient teaching of students requires specific skills, knowledge and personality traits. Defining competence is not an easy task because it is a notion that has multiple meanings, and one that is interpreted from various angles. Academic teacher's competencies are primarily connected with specific assignments and determined activities. They result from experience and form a clearly defined pool of knowledge and skills which are integrated and somewhat mechanical. The level of academic teacher’s competencies depends on the possessed knowledge, personal abilities and the skill of implementing those appropriately, qualifications and experience, attitude and motivation. The set of general competencies is composed of an open set of predispositions enabling its supplementation and development. A competent academic teacher is a teacher who performs his/her work well, and his/her skills positively affect pedagogical achievements.
