Abstract

Praca stanowi prosopograficzne studium barbarzyńców znajdujących się w służbie cesarstwa wschodniorzymskiego w V wieku po Chr. Składa się ona z 48 biogramów barbarzyńców w służbie wschodniorzymskiej (Alanów, Arabów, Armeńczyków, Germanów, Persów i Hunów). Ponadto, treść uzupełnia pięć rozdziałów opisowych, z których dwa stanowią ogólne wprowadzenie Czytelnika do omawianej tematyki, a trzy pozostałe zawierają szczegółowe wnioski sformułowane na podstawie badań opisywanej zbiorowości. Dotyczą one takich tematów jak: pozycja barbarzyńców w ówczesnym państwie rzymskim, ich wpływ na politykę państwową oraz szeroko rozumiane kwestie stosunku barbarzyńców do Kościoła i ich religijności.

The PhD. dissertation treats of barbarians in the service, both military and civilian, of the East Roman Empire in Vth century. It's a prosopographical study which consists of forty eight biograms of barbarians, who were, even for a short time, in the Roman service (They were: Alans, Arabs, Armenians, Germans, Persians and Huns). Moreover, there are five descriptive chapters, from which two are general, only to introduce the Reader to the epoch, and the others three, which include detailed conclusions, based on analysis of the biograms. They generally treated of: social status of barbarians in the Late East Roman Empire society, influence of this group on politics, and widely understood question of the relations between the barbarians and the Church, and religiousness of that group.
