In 1903, Przegląd Powszechny announced a competition for the most interesting work whose contents or main motif was
to be a subject connected with the life of Virgin Mary. Editorial board madę a reservation that beside talent, what
should also be considered was to be consistency of ideas and feelings with Catholic principles. The ąualification
reąuirement was the loyalty to doctrine of the submitted works. They were sent in the number of 31 pieces coming
mainly firom Galicia. The competition was not only important in the perspective of Catholic social science, but it
also took place at the time when positivist philosophy was shaking and a literary model linked with it, in which
the view on social utility sand aesthetic harmony dominated, was unstable as well. The estimates by the literary
jury originated from the utilitarian model although they were based on anti-positivist outlook. The literaturę
viewed by the jury was also meant to serve a utilitarian purpose. The sphere of intuition and expe- rience was
looked down on although the submitted works freąuently included the elements of religious mysticism. Contents and
tasks of Catholic defence against socialism (in social thought), positivism (in philosophy) and Catholic modemism
won.
