Voivodine is the autonomous area belonging to Serbia, covering the area of 21 505 sq km, inhabited by 2 012 517
people (1991). Taking into account ethnic composition Voivodine makes a mosaic.
There are four main groups: Serbs, Hungarians, Croatians and Slovacs and beside them there are 15 other ethnic
gropus. Such great diversity is caused by complicated history of that area and by affluence of different ethnic
groups from the ancient times up till now. During 48 years after the end of the World War П, participation of
particular ethnic groups in Voivodine has undergone different changes. The number of Serbs, Montenegrians, Moslims,
Albanians and Gypsies increased as well as their percentage share in the total number of population on that area.
The same process concerned „Jugoslovians”. Different situation was observed as to Croatians, Hungarians, Czechs,
Slovacs, Romanians and Ukrainians as their percentage share and total number of population decreased.
Some facts should be emphasized in considerations on ethnic structure of Voivodine. It appeared, during the
population census in 1991, that great increase of Serbs domination was noticeable, number of so called
„Jugoslovians” and number of people who call themselves according to the region they live in (e.g. Sremianians) and
hardly known ethnic groups (Bunjevits, Soktians) increased. Concentration of covergence of particular nations with
historical process of the area settlement what is confirmed by spatial distribution of ethnic heterogenous ratio
values is significant.
