The article is an interpretation of the novel Ciemno, prawie noc (It’s dark, almost night) by
Joanna Bator. It focuses on the specific vision of Wałbrzych, a real city located in the South of
Poland. The vision consists of many traditional and present-day patterns entitled to create
spatial images. In her novel, Bator examines methods of presenting urban spaces in literature
which leads her to constructing a representation of a non-town. Destruction of the emotional
sphere of the human personality (the case of the narrator – main character) damages the
possibility of habituating the sphere of existence (home, quarter, town, province).
