The author recalls the views of Aleksander Kamiński, an outstanding educator and a cofounder
of the scouts movement, on the relations between pedagogy and politics. Kamiński had
to function in difficult circumstances, during the war and occupation and in the period of the
communist government in Poland. His vision of democracy, created at that time, was characterized
by humanism and anti-totalitarianism. Kamiński highlighted such advantages of democracy
as liberty, equality, and parliamentarianism. He saw the civil and moral responsibilities as
conjoined; he postulated creating local structures of self-government, which he found important
also at school. He encouraged propagating the democratic thought and putting it to practice.
Many of Kamiński’s theses and proposals deserve attention also today, as – in the author’s
opinion – the struggle for democracy and democratic education is continually carried on.
