The Department of Defense Education, which existed between the years 2000 and 2009, made significant progress in its
development. In addition to research and teaching function, it also trained students in the civil defense preparation as a
substitution of the compulsory military service. The training was completed by 4,844 students. In the 2004/2005 academic year,
part-time bachelor studies were opened at the Pedagogical University in the Off-campus Educational Centre in Tarnów. The
Department received a positive evaluation of the National Accreditation Commission. In May 2005, it was excluded from the
organizational structure of the Institute of Education Sciences and formed an independent unit. In 2009, the Department was
renamed following a change of the main studies specialization.
During the 9 years of the Department’s activity (2000-2009), there were 1599 graduates including: 368 who received post-
graduate degree, 808 who received master’s degree (both full-time and part-time) and 423 students who received bachelor’s
degree (part-time). They joined the Ministry of Education staff and the uniformed services. The academic program changes with
the evolution of the school system. The graduates easily find employment
at schools and institutions related to the national defense. Scientific potential of the Department and interests of the candidates
justify plans for further development of the organizational unit.
