The reform of higher education in the 90s resulted in very deep changes in educational strategies
at universities. The encyclopedic way of acquiring knowledge gave way to activating
students in creative and imaginative activities. The author of this article tries to define educational
goals, to say what a syllabus is and also presents her own syllabus of teaching business
Russian for the III year students of Russian Philology at the Jagielonian University. According
to the author of this article, it is necessary to take into account two important criteria while
creating a syllabus, especially of teaching a specialized language. Firstly, it is a criterion for
usefulness of knowledge in the present or future job. Secondly, it is a criterion for needs of the
learner, which depend on the demands of the contemporary world.
