In my article, I concentrate on what educational values are, especially safety. I emphasize the
role that parents and school play, teaching children how to live a safe but active life. I also
refer to my research on educational values in didactic theory and school practice. It included
four stages: the analysis of (mainly pedagogical) literature, the analysis of press articles, the
analysis of curricula, and finally the inquiry in gymnasiums, with both teachers and students
filling in the questionnaires. The list of all educational values contained 32 values, and safety
was one of the five health and environmental values. One of the conclusions is that safety in
a way determines the accomplishment of other values, because if one feels endangered, he or
she will not concentrate e.g. on cognitive or creative values. School should be a place where
both students and teachers feel safe.
