The article includes the results of a study, the aim of which was to determine the level of
the adaptation ability of students with medium and large disability between 17 and 25
years old at the Rehabilitation and Education Facility in Staszów. The study also included
getting familiar to the methods and the effectiveness of work on the development of
independence in people with intellectual disability of a deeper level in the aforementioned
facility. Special attention has to be paid to the project realized in the facility, entitled "A flat
as a road to independence", in which the studied people learn to independently perform
actions connected to housekeeping, such as cooking, tidying, and develop their autonomic
abilities. Based on in-depth observation, educator interviews, using the prepared survey,
a level of independence of deeper level intellectual disability was defined. The first part of the
article includes, the theoretical findings on the independence of people with a deeper level
of intellectual disability. Next, there is an analysis of the results of the conducted study. The
article ends with a conclusion and practical implications on the improvement of the current
level of autonomy of the studied people.
