Abstract

European countries, including Poland, seeking to build civil society, develop the core values of democracy and strengthen social cohesion in the face of ever-increasing challenges of the modern world. In these circumstances, there is a need to shape attitudes – primarily citizenship, which is associated with an attitude derived from participation of a unit or units in the collective self-consciousness of the civil society. Civil society is seen in turn as a component of a democratic state. For a proper citizenship attitude a sense of self-awareness means the feeling that others are also taking part in the joint action to create communities, organizations, associations, and finally to fulfill the needs of a democratic state. It is an expression of the understanding of the role, including the obligations and rights of the citizen to the state as well as the conscious understanding of the role of the state towards the citizen. Research indicates that the civil maturity in Poland has a lot of work ahead of it.
