Uninhabited building can be recognize as a symptom of ongoing changes. Emptiness of large
architectural structures in the city is like a kind of state of emergency, and sign of crisis and
decay. From the other hand uninhabited building can give hope for a new beginning and a new
order. Duration where building is uninhabited becomes kind of liminal event for the urban
community. Surprisingly the vacancy can have emancipator and anty-hieratic potential. Can
trigger a public discussion about the situation of the district, the entire city and right to the
city. In postindustrial Łódź Uninhabited building are sanctioned by many historical artistic
events as a place “for culture”. Article presents a specific moment that occurred the first
decade of the twenty-first century, describing dissonance between the wishful thinking of
business and municipal authorities and real situation of shrinking city. Uninhabited buildings
became a catalyst, symbolic material and infrastructure for artists and activists who being
involved in the actions focused on citizens right and protection of valuable resources.
