The article presents a discussion of semantic and pragmatic equivalence relations that occur between the elements of a paraphrase. The process of reformulation is understood as an element of the communication strategy, and consists in transforming the utterance so that its elements are semantically identical or equivalent. The analysis of examples proves that the interlocutors, using paraphrases on the discourse level, arbitrarily introduce the paraphrastic relations between the elements of the reformulation. In this case, pragmatic equivalence between the reformulated element and the reformulating one is visible in the use of language in a spoken communication event. The examples used include acronyms and their extensions, as well as explanations of scientific terms. They are subjected to paraphrastic reformulation analysis in terms of semantic equivalence, i.e. identity relation between the elements of the utterance.en
