The article concentrates on the drama Cosmogony by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz. It presents
the identity problems concentrated around the main character. Next, the article describes
Seweryn, the male character of the story and his struggle against himself on the artistic,
social and sexual planes. The paper is an attempt at presenting the main character’s modern
outlook on life by shaping the motive of love coexisting with death. The usage of the Faustian
Theme is regarded by the author as an element commonly employed in the artistic work of
Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz. Moreover, the paper is aimed at the darker site of the main character’s
personality, such as amorality and social disfunctionalism, and it shows his confinement in
a web of obsession and complexes connected with the passing life. The paper is concluded
with an attempt at describing Seweryn’s negative identity, which led him to a crime.
