This article describes possibilities of investigations of systems comprised of polymer and active
(drug) substance by means of Magnetic Resonance methods. Such systems are commonly used
for preparing prolonged, controlled release dosage forms. Dissolution study is a basic method
in pharmaceutical industry for evaluation of dosage forms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MR
imaging) can be used as an additional method performed simultaneously with dissolution
study in the non-invasive manner. Basics of MR imaging were described shortly together
with equipment necessary to obtain MR images. Existing hardware setups for simultaneous
MR imaging and dissolution study were presented. Advantages of the setup developed by
the authors of the article were emphasized. The method can be directly applied to obtain
quantitative information about differences between investigated dosage forms even when
the have identical dissolution profiles. Literature data showed that dosage forms having
identical dissolution profiles can have different bioavailability.
