There is no doubt about the main role of time in the novel Momo by Michael
Ende. But the question of time is crucial in his other books – The Neverending
Story and The Night of Wishes: or The Satanarchaeolidealcohellish Notion Potion –
as well. Time as a leitmotiv of diegesis can play different roles in the stories,
such as determining the space or describing the characters and contributing to
the creation of their identities. These and other functions of time have been analyzed
in this article and compared with the philosophical concept of time, according
to Henry Bergson. The contribution concludes that perception of time
as duration, which has been postulated by Bergson, shows the essence of the
concept of time as an inner sense in the novels of Ende.
