dc.description.abstract | The article begins by tracing the developments that led to the writing of Jim Button
and Lukas the Engine Driver (Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer), Michael
Ende’s breakout fantasy novel for children. It also discusses the reception
of the book in the author’s home Germany and neighboring Poland, showing
the asymmetrical relation between the two. Adopting a translation studies perspective,
the article investigates how the literary source text was transformed
and modified in the literary translation and the subsequent screen adaptations.
The focus is on proper names and naming, as they constitute a relevant aspect
of Ende’s literary style. The article analyzes the rendition of proper names as
a translation problem and the implications of translators’ decisions to maintain
the consistency of the world created in the novel. | en |
