This article discusses the problems of translating into Polish the spells spoken
by the main characters in Michael Ende’s novel Der satanarchäolügenialkohöllische
Wunschpunsch while sipping New Year’s Eve punch. The short introduction
presents selected views on the eternal problem of translators related to
the difficulty of keeping both the content and form faithful to the original.
The considerations took particular account of the features of children’s literature.
Attention was also paid to the translator’s dilemmas resulting from three
functions of children’s literature: teaching, entertainment, and aesthetics. The
practical part, conversely, contains an analysis of spell translations, the aim of
which is to determine the techniques used by the translator to find a compromise
between form and content.
