The approach to children with disabilities has significantly changed over centuries in response to developments in law, religion, social norms, and science. Other key factors were the changing views of European societies on children in general, an increase in sensitivity to children’s needs, and the rising popularity of universal education. Gradually, due to the influence of the Enlightenment worldview, disabled children started to receive not only regular care, but also education. Generally, the treatment of people with disabilities in Europe is moving toward complete acceptance of their rights, and creation of conditions that would enable them to fully integrate with the society in all aspects of life. Additionally, in the case of disabled children, there is emphasis on administering education in an open setting, and entrusting the families with a significant role in the rehabilitation process.en
