O słownictwie żeglarskim na Niemnie

Abstract

The subject of this paper is the rafting vocabulary used on the Nemunas River, preserved in Zygmunt Gloger’s work Dolinami rzek (Along Rivers’ Valleys, 1872/1903). It contains rich lexical material from the field of sailing and rafting, as well as the names of several dozen underwater reefs and rocks (altogether around 50 terms). They have been analyzed according to the work of Prof. Jan Ożdżyński, who thoroughly compiled all the Polish rafting vocabulary in the historical and cultural context. In Z. Gloger’s work there are also numerous remarks concerning social, ethnic and linguistic relationships on the banks of the river between Grodno and Kowno in the second half of the19th century.
