Theatre of experiences is a form of a non-directive group activity created for students with severe multiple
disabilities. How to reconcile the requirements posed by the theatre and acting with the abilities of disabled
people who are to play the main role? After numerous attempts to find a way in which students with severe multiple
disabilities could participate in theatrical classes a form of the classes was developed in which the creation was
changed into experience and the role of the actor was to explore oneself and create relationships with others. The
quality of this exceptional event is a result of the actions of an actor and his interactions with others. Means
hidden in the theatre – its magic and exceptional atmosphere – were used to create strong motivation and were made
to speak a language that is comprehensible for the students – the language of sensory experiences: light, colours,
music, etc.
In order to make the form of classes more familiar I will present four main elements of the theatre of experiences,
namely the stage design, plot, communication and activities. The theatre of experiences combined magic and the
exceptional atmosphere of the theatre with the specificity of perception of reality and functioning abilities of
people with severe multiple disabilities. The stage design creates a space, atmosphere of extraordinariness and
attention that release interest, motivation, concentration, which in turn help to realize the sensory, action and
communicative needs.
