Abstract

The article presents the dependencies between the levels of health of people with leukemia treated with the bone marrow transplant method (BMT) ad the ways they deal with stress. The theoretical basis for the research included the author Functional Health Model (Funkcjonalny Model Zdrowia – FMZ) by Helena Wrona-Polańska – constructed theoretically on a basis of own research conducted among people with leukemia, and verified empyrically in the research of healthy people. Health in the FMZ is a function of creative stress management. The research of people with leukemia treated with the bone marrow transplant method at the Hematology Clinic of the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum, have proven statistically important dependencies between the sense of health and the styles and strategies of stress management. The return to health is favoured by strategies of distracting from the illness and taking health-based activities, strongly strengthened by the task-oriented style and avoidance-oriented style with the search for support type. The health hazard can be located in the strategy of concentrating on the negative emotions, strongly supported by the emotional style. The Functional Health Model of the sick people can be a basis for constructing a programme promoting regaining their subjective health and good life quality.
