Abstract

Basing on the experiences and worked out standards of community care work in Western countries like Italy, Finland or Germany, Poland has developed the Model of Community Mental Health Centre. Research in the above-mentioned partner countries demonstrates that the idea of organizing psychiatric treatment within a community brings considerable therapeutic effects and reduces the cost of treatment. The essence of the work focused on the needs of patients is to protect them form institutionalization, to put emphasis on their independence and activity and to deter them from falling into traps of disability pension or benefit scheme or into complete professional inactivity.
