In the recent research studies done by media researches, teachers, and educationalists on
the role of new media in formation and humanistic education, many different phenomena
were mentioned, including the phenomenon of digital natives, opportunities and threats of
the cyberspace, functioning of texts on the web, educational functionality of virtual worlds,
e-learning’s role in education, “the new language” in electronic media, literary hypertexts,
“scattered knowledge” and hypertextual reading, convergence of media, management of
school’s educational information, and – broadly defined – educational roles of the media.
One of such challenges of the contemporary school education is the e-textbook: interactive
and divided into content and multimedia layers; enriched with advanced multimedia
elements, animations, and simulations; featuring easy navigation between sources; providing
interactive exercises; ensuring the user’s systematic work with the textbook; publishable on
educational web portals; accessible on many different devices; enabling printing of selected
fragments; and publishable on e-learning platforms, with the option to review educational
progress in terms of the whole textbook or its parts.
