The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the monitoring body of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) defines corporal or physical punishment as: any punishment in which physical force is used and intended to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, no matter how light it has been. The punishment is a violation of children s rights to have their physical integrity, human dignity and equal protection respected under the law. In many cases, corporal punishment can jeopardise children's rights to education, development, health and even their right to live. The countries have an obligation to provide a comprehensive and multi-sectoral response to all forms of violence against children. Abolishing corporal punishment calls for the development of policies and services that prevent violence, effectively protect children and assist child victims. This article presents selected international, regional and national campaigns for law reform to prohibit all corporal punishment of children.en_EN
