One of the key tasks of The Commission of National Education was to precisely define the role of a teacher. The Commission emphasized the importance of education and the relative lack of interest in the prospective teachers’ social standing. In addition, the Commission cleared up the regulations on teachers’ labor and compensation as well as the education of secular teachers. Finally, the Commission also contributed to resolving the issue of ex-Jesuits, teachers whose faith had been debated in the parliament even before the Commission was established. One of the crucial documents in this respect was “The Order and Structure of Education in Provincial [i.e. Secondary] Schools” published in 1774. The document contained information about the various school subjects and their position in the curriculum.en_EN
