Born in Cracow, Andrzej Badurski after his studies in Italy, returned to his hometown where he became Professor and Dean at Cracow University. There he reformed the Medical Faculty and accomplished the work of his life – in 1780 founded the first hospital that educated students, St. Barbaraʼs clinic. He cooperated closely with The Commission of National Education, especially with its representative Hugo Kołłątaj who was Chancellor at the Crown Main School. During organizing the hospital, he was confronted with difficulties – the Cracow Butchers Union which did not agree that the sewage system from hospital run across their grounds. The article also describes sanitary conditions prevailing in Cracow at the end of XVIIIth century.en_EN
