The article presents a report on investigation carried out by the author in the years 1967-1969. The purpose of the
investigation was to elaborate a sort of work with the students of the first course of the mathematical faculty
that would ease their adaptation in the uniwersity, and would help reduce the number of throw-outs through enabling
them to overcome encountered difficulties.
The form of organizing self-dependent work of students characterised in detail in the article consists in combining
programmed instruction (a guiding text called "Programme" was distributed) explanatory teaching (a lecture),
problem-solving method, work with a textbook and discussion.
The elaborated project was verified experimentally and its usefulness for practice was evaluated.
In order to determine objectively effects of the experiment, the results of two groups, equivalent in view of some
accepted criteria, were compared both in qualitative and in quantitative analysis.
On the grounds of the analysis reinforced hipoteses were formulated concerning the form of organizing work
subjected to the experiment. It was established that the said form
a) makes easier to the first-course students to get accustomed to the university system, of learning and helps to
reduce the number of throw-outs in the first year more effectively than the forms of classes traditionally used in
the mathematical faculty of the Higher Pedagogical School in Kraków,
b) produces results that show a difference (essential on the 0,05 level) against results reached through
traditional forms of classes,
с) makes possible a more profound understanding and faster acquisition of the taken contents by the students,
d) its influence on reduction of the number of mistakes concerning concepts and theorems is more evident,
e) shows a superiority over the traditional method of acquiring the technique of reading mathematical text by the
students.
