Katarzyna Pławecka in her article An outline of a woman scientist. Marie Skłodowska-Curie in contemporary Polish studies reflects on a position of the two-time Nobel Prize winner in the Polish educational framework. The author analyses several middle-high and high school textbooks for students learning Polish for evidence relating the frequency and ways of presentation of Marie Skłodowska-Curie in them. The textbook picture of the Nobel Prizes laureate appears to be “modest and incomplete”. The author points out that little interest shown by the textbook writers in this “extraordinary woman” is due to the following: a) too general curriculum guidelines that do not introduce pupils to the most influential and acclaimed Polish figures in history; b) lack of Marie Skłodowska-Curie achievements in literature; c) social changes promoting spectacular successes of an individual rather than values exercised by Marie Skłodowska-Curie in the years between WWI and WWII, ie: following a vocation, displaying consciousness in research, devotion to the welfare of others and contributing to the good of society (including struggle for women’s emancipation), concern for the homeland and cultivation of the mother tongue.en_EN
