dc.description.abstractThe social and political turning point, that in 1989 caused a change in the political system in Poland, has as well influenced the educational system. There appeared a chance of a radical rebuilding of the educational system and other institutions dealing with education. The purpose was clear: democratisation in the education, its further spreading, elevation of the efficiency of both education and upbringing. Nevertheless, there have loomed up various barriers and difficulties. They have brought about a delay and disturbances in the process of changes in many fields of the educational system. The book comprises a multilateral analysis of the educational changes taking place in Poland in the 1990ies. It consists of four parts. The first comprises a general study on the transformations in the educational system. The author characterises here the starting point on the verge of the system transformations, presents the legal modifications related to the education, discusses the problems of the conversion as well as the current project of a complex school reform. Part two presents the results of the research on the opinions of teachers and principals, regarding the education in Poland and the current trends of changes in this field. For a direct, every-day participation of the respondents in the process of the education of children and youth, their professional skills, evaluation of the educational situations and phenomena, performed by this group under investigation, those results are worth paying attention to. Part three discusses the results of the research on the system of values of teachers, parents and school- children. It enables a comparison of the similarities and differences in the hierarchy of the values of the said groups of respondents, and generally speaking - an .examination of a large number of educational aspects of social consciousness. Part four deliberates the problems of one of the most important educational institutions - the family. The author presents the menaces to the educational functions of the family and the educational consequences of the parents’ unemployment. The work is concluded in part five, entitled ’What pedagogy? Here is analysed the aftermath of a new social and economic situation in Poland for the sciences of education, challenges of social pedagogy in the time of the system transformation, reciprocal relations between pedagogy and educational policy, finally, the consequences of the educational challenges of the contemporary world affecting the work of a university level school teacher. Therefore, the book comprises a wide range of educational problems of the system transformation in Poland as well as the balance of the educational achievements and failures in the field of education after 1989- The author does not limit his considerations to the presentation of facts and events but adds his own comment and a large number of discussable notes. Thus, the work constitutes a part of an ample discussion on the state of the Polish educational system and its outlooks of development on the verge of the new millennium.en_EN
